Sustainability Practices
ORGANIC CERTIFICATION
- Organic Certified by JASCERT (equivalent of EU-BIO, USDA, Canada Organic)
- Hikari's organic tea is cultivated with precise organic methods, avoiding synthetic fertilizer for pest and weed management or processing.
- Soil fertility is maintained by using natural compost. Chemical fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals are not be used for at least two years before sowing/planting, and while the crops are being cultivated (at least three years for perennial plants before harvest).
- Genetically modified seeds and seedlings are not used.
- Farmers in Shizuoka hold the “Eco-farmer” certification and advocate natural compost for nourishing the tea plants.
PACKAGING
- Aluminum tins are one of the most recyclable materials in the world. As part of our matcha subscription program, we made it possible to repurpose the tin and buy foil refills to replace the matcha at a discounted price.
- All shipping boxes and shipping envelopes are recyclable to the highest degree allowed by paper industry standards. They are also printed in North America using materials sourced in each local region, resulting in a much lower carbon footprint than foreign manufacturers.
